SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 313,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was 319,250, an increase
of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 319,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Nov. 21, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 21 was 2,307,000, an increase of 127,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,180,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,231,500, an increase of 26,500 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,205,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 295,145 in the week ending Nov. 28, a decrease of 44,015
from the previous week. There were 309,585 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during
the week ending Nov. 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,885,215, a decrease of 120,266 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,895,920.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
Nov. 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,738 in the week ending Nov. 21, a decrease of 182 from the prior
week. There were 1,281 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 108 from the preceding week.
There were 19,665 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 14, an increase of 730 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,687, an increase of 1,330 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 14 were
in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (5.0), Washington (2.9), California (2.8),
Oregon (2.7), Arkansas (2.4), Hawaii (2.4), Rhode Island (2.4), New Jersey
(2.3), and Pennsylvania (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 21 were
in Michigan (+6,020), Pennsylvania (+2,920), New York (+2,046), Illinois
(+2,031), and Minnesota (+1,686), while the largest decreases were in Missouri
(-1,959), Georgia (-1,054), Ohio (-940), South Carolina (-915), and Texas
(-807).
