SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 300,000, a decrease of 39,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 339,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,500, a decrease of
250 from the previous week's revised average of 318,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Nov. 14, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 14 was 2,195,000, a decrease of 46,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,241,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,208,000, an
increase of 8,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,199,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 338,547 in the week ending Nov. 21, an increase of 23,939
from the previous week. There were 342,427 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending Nov. 14, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,019,459, an increase of 182,128 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,040,475.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
Nov. 7.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,916 in the week ending Nov. 14, an increase of 279 from the prior
week. There were 1,163 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 255 from the preceding week.
There were 18,943 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 7, an increase of 285 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,433, a decrease of 833 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 7 were in
Puerto Rico (5.3 percent), Alaska (4.7), Washington (2.8), Oregon (2.6),
California (2.4), Hawaii (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), New Jersey
(2.1), and Pennsylvania (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 14 were
in Missouri (+1,615), New Jersey (+1,546), Minnesota (+1,502), South Carolina
(+1,290), and New York (+917), while the largest decreases were in California
(-7,166), Texas (-2,595), Alabama (-2,176), Pennsylvania (-2,011), and
Washington (-1,952).
