ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [11/12/1998]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 321,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,500, an increase of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 311,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 31, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 31 was 2,215,000, an increase of 14,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,201,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,199,250, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,187,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 330,733 in the week ending Nov. 7, an increase of 51,171 from the previous week. There were 322,603 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Oct. 31, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,862,795, an increase of 64,915 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,876,842.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,583 in the week ending Oct. 31, an increase of 66 from the prior week. There were 1,211 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 95 from the preceding week.

There were 19,004 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 24, a decrease of 121 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,902, a decrease of 260 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 24 were in Puerto Rico (7.9 percent), Alaska (4.2), Washington (2.4), California (2.3), Hawaii (2.3), Oregon (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.1), and New Jersey (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 31 were in California (+4,712), Texas (+2,088), Washington (+1,614), South Carolina (+1,398), and North Carolina (+1,218), while the largest decreases were in Mississippi (-5,111), Florida (-3,049), Puerto Rico (-2,624), Oklahoma (-821), and Tennessee (-560).
