SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 312,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 302,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,000, an increase
of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 309,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Oct. 24, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 24 was 2,225,000, an increase of 63,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,162,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,193,750, an
increase of 12,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,181,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 281,918 in the week ending Oct. 31, an increase of 5,570
from the previous week. There were 292,927 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Oct. 24, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,818,122, an
increase of 2,383 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6
percent and the volume was 1,845,917.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 17.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,524 in the week ending Oct. 24, a decrease of 86 from the prior week.
There were 1,306 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 90
from the preceding week.
There were 19,189 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 17, an increase of 462 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,314, an increase of 622 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 17 were
in Puerto Rico (7.8 percent), Alaska (3.7), Hawaii (2.4), Washington (2.4),
California (2.3), Oregon (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), New Jersey (2.1), Pennsylvania
(2.1), and Rhode Island (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 24 were
in California (+4,423), New York (+3,117), Mississippi (+2,955), Virginia
(+2,010), and Ohio (+1,648), while the largest decreases were in Puerto Rico
(-2,302), North Carolina (-1,432), Georgia (-1,139), Alabama (-941), and
Delaware (-519).
