SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 24, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 319,000. The 4-week moving average was
309,250, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of
306,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Oct. 17, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 17 was 2,169,000, a decrease of 52,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,221,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,183,000, an
increase of 10,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,173,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 275,152 in the week ending Oct. 24, an increase of 18,194
from the previous week. There were 273,275 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Oct. 17, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,822,069, an increase of 83,416 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,821,677.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 10.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,605 in the week ending Oct. 17, a decrease of 1,029 from the prior
week. There were 1,216 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 282 from the preceding week.
There were 18,729 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 10, an increase of 1,370 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,681, a decrease of 154 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 10 were
in Puerto Rico (7.2 percent), Alaska (3.5), Hawaii (2.4), Washington (2.3),
California (2.2), Oregon (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.1), Rhode
Island (2.0), and New Jersey (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 17 were
in Delaware (+583), and Vermont (+126), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-3,692), California (-3,322), Alabama (-3,229), New York
(-2,991), and Texas (-2,591).
