SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 318,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 316,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,500, an increase
of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of 300,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Oct. 10, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 10 was 2,231,000, an increase of 63,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,168,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,175,750, an
increase of 9,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,166,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 256,077 in the week ending Oct. 17, a decrease of 45,122
from the previous week. There were 255,636 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Oct. 10, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,747,066, an increase of 21,418 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,780,549.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,654 in the week ending Oct. 10, an increase of 101 from the prior
week. There were 1,503 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 115 from the preceding week.
There were 17,370 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 3, an increase of 41 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,001, an increase of 59 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 3 were in
Puerto Rico (6.7 percent), Alaska (3.2), Hawaii (2.3), California (2.2),
Washington (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), Oregon (2.1), New Jersey (2.0), Pennsylvania
(2.0), and Rhode Island (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 10 were
in Puerto Rico (+6,816), Texas (+3,563),Alabama (+3,366), Washington (+2,952),
and California (+2,841), while the largest decreases were in Iowa (-2,794), the
Virgin Islands (-188), Alaska (-137), and Nevada (-93).
