SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 303,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was 297,000, an increase
of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 296,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Oct. 3, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 3 was 2,203,000, an increase of 22,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,181,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,176,500, an
increase of 2,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,174,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 288,833 in the week ending Oct. 10, an increase of 42,425
from the previous week. There were 286,439 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Oct. 3, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,753,957, an
increase of 2,259 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5
percent and the volume was 1,774,442.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Sept. 26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,556 in the week ending Oct. 3, an increase of 1,172 from the prior
week. There were 1,396 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 54 from the preceding week.
There were 17,476 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 26, an increase of 517 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,136, an increase of 269 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 26 were
in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Alaska (3.2), Hawaii (2.4), California (2.3),
Oregon (2.2), Washington (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), New Jersey (2.1), Pennsylvania
(2.1), and Rhode Island (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 3 were
in California(+3,641), Iowa (+3,356),Pennsylvania (+2,417), New York (+2,281),
and Florida (+2,149), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-1,284), Tennessee (-710), Georgia (-526), South Carolina (-519), and
Louisiana (-516).
