SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 300,000, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 289,000. The 4-week moving average was 295,750, a decrease
of 3,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 299,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Sept. 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 26 was 2,222,000, an increase of 89,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,133,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,185,750, an increase of 1,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,184,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 245,614 in the week ending Oct. 3, an increase of 22,137
from the previous week. There were 260,707 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Sept. 26, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,784,284, an
increase of 28,671 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6
percent and the volume was 1,805,505.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Sept. 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,379 in the week ending Sept. 26, a decrease of 205 from the prior
week. There were 1,445 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 103 from the preceding week.
There were 17,025 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 19, a decrease of 554 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,051, a decrease of 224 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 19 were
in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (3.2), Hawaii (2.4), California (2.3),
Washington (2.3), Oregon (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), New Jersey (2.1), Rhode Island
(2.1), and Pennsylvania (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 26
were in Illinois (+816), Alabama (+193), California (+171), New Mexico (+157),
and Ohio (+148), while the largest decreases were in Florida (-2,602), New York
(-2,194), North Carolina (-1,674), Michigan (-1,358), and Connecticut (-1,210).
