In the week ending Sept. 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 289,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 294,000. The 4-week moving average was 299,250, a decrease of
3,750 from the previous week's revised average of 303,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Sept. 19, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 19 was 2,141,000, a decrease of
51,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,192,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,185,750, a decrease of 24,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,210,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 222,745 in the week ending Sept. 26, a decrease
of 14,731 from the previous week. There were 237,216 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending Sept. 19, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 1,761,926, a decrease of 103,276 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was
1,818,508.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Sept. 12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,582 in the week ending Sept. 19, an increase of 221 from
the prior week. There were 1,340 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 76 from the preceding week.
There were 17,702 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 12, an increase of 1,496 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,490,
an increase of 1,126 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Sept. 12 were in Puerto Rico (5.3 percent), Alaska (3.3), Hawaii (2.6),
California (2.4), Washington (2.4), New Jersey (2.3), Oregon (2.3),
Pennsylvania (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), and Arkansas (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 19 were in California (+5,506), New York (+2,461), North Carolina
(+1,937), South Carolina (+1,561), and Georgia (+1,342), while the largest
decreases were in Washington (-723), Ohio (-619), Minnesota (-381), Colorado
(-364), and Pennsylvania (-309).
