SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 292,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 300,000. The 4-week moving average was 302,500, a decrease of
1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 304,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Sept. 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 12 was 2,201,000, an increase of 2,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,199,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,213,500, a
decrease of 5,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,218,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 235,717 in the week ending Sept. 19, an increase of 18,479
from the previous week. There were 246,063 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during
the week ending Sept. 12, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,873,298, an increase of 63,521 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,855,676.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Sept. 5.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,360 in the week ending Sept. 12, a decrease of 174 from the prior
week. There were 1,263 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 241 from the preceding week.
There were 16,217 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 5, a decrease of 811 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,548, a decrease of 799 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 5 were
in Puerto Rico (5.3 percent), Alaska (3.3), Hawaii (2.5), Washington (2.4), New
Jersey (2.3), Oregon (2.3), Rhode Island (2.3), California (2.2), Pennsylvania
(2.2), Arkansas (2.0), and New York (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 12
were in Michigan (+503), Tennessee (+347), Georgia (+64), Arkansas (+42), and
Kansas (+39), while the largest decreases were in Minnesota (-6,779),
California (-6,013), Indiana (-2,396), Texas (-1,926), and Pennsylvania
(-1,727).
