SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 297,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 303,000. The 4-week moving average was 302,750, a decrease of
750 from the previous week's revised average of 303,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Aug. 15, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Aug. 15 was 2,235,000, a decrease of 50,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,285,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,321,250, a
decrease of 40,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,361,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 236,849 in the week ending Aug. 22, a decrease of 10,506
from the previous week. There were 255,241 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending Aug. 15, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,058,297, a decrease of 62,360 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,107,978.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Aug. 8.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,219 in the week ending Aug. 15, a decrease of 241 from the prior
week. There were 1,436 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 125 from the preceding week.
There were 18,519 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Aug. 8, a decrease of 256 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,171, a decrease of 38 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 8 were in
Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (3.5),Rhode Island (2.9), Hawaii (2.6),
Michigan (2.6), Washington (2.6), California (2.5), New Jersey (2.5), Oregon
(2.5), and Pennsylvania (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 15 were
in North Carolina (+2,639), Arizona (+1,029), New Mexico (+243), Puerto Rico
(+205), and Minnesota (+148), while the largest decreases were in California
(-8,491), Ohio (-4,604), Michigan (-4,515), Wisconsin (-2,493), and
Pennsylvania (-1,902).
