SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 303,000. The 4-week moving average was 303,000, a decrease of
4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 307,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Aug. 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the
prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Aug. 8 was 2,295,000, a decrease of 49,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,344,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,367,250, a
decrease of 20,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,387,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 245,808 in the week ending Aug. 15, a decrease of 33,883
from the previous week. There were 272,911 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending Aug. 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,129,418, a decrease of 106,335 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,114,719.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Aug. 1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,460 in the week ending Aug. 8, an increase of 40 from the prior week.
There were 1,561 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
260 from the preceding week.
There were 18,872 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Aug. 1, an increase of 281 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,363, an increase of 107 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 1 were in
Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (3.4), Michigan (3.3), Rhode Island (3.0),
Hawaii (2.7), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Washington (2.6), Oregon
(2.5), and California (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 8 were
in California (+3,350), Arkansas (+1,576), Wisconsin (+1,507), New Jersey
(+1,220), and Puerto Rico (+1,101), while the largest decreases were in Ohio
(-6,334), Michigan (-2,559), Alabama (-1,345), Kentucky (-1,109), and Indiana
(-962).
