SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 308,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,500, a decrease of
9,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 315,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending Aug. 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Aug. 1 was 2,353,000, a decrease of 81,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,434,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,389,750, a
decrease of 7,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,396,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 278,278 in the week ending Aug. 8, an increase of 624 from
the previous week. There were 289,083 initial claims in the comparable week in
1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending Aug. 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,244,689, a
decrease of 69,964 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8
percent and the volume was 2,115,621.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,424 in the week ending Aug. 1, a decrease of 235 from the prior week.
There were 1,302 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 142
from the preceding week.
There were 18,581 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 25, a decrease of 101 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,226, a decrease of 86 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 25 were
in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Michigan (4.0), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (3.0),
Hawaii (2.7), California (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6),
Washington (2.6), and Oregon (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 1 were
in Washington (+1,029), Kentucky (+709), Iowa (+492), Connecticut (+349), and
Utah (+327), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-7,828), Missouri
(-4,977), Tennessee (-4,370), California (-3,488), and North Carolina
(-3,204).
