SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 307,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,500, a decrease of
21,750 from the previous week's revised average of 337,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.0 percent for the week ending July 25, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending July 25 was 2,447,000, an increase of
51,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,396,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,400,000, an increase of 6,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,393,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 277,005 in the week ending Aug. 1, a decrease of
39,204 from the previous week. There were 273,475 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent during the week ending July 25, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,327,012, an increase of 5,650 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,179,380.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending July 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,656 in the week ending July 25, a decrease of 174 from the
prior week. There were 1,444 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 48 from the preceding week.
There were 18,685 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 18, an increase of 1,062 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,297, an
increase of 277 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
July 18 were in Puerto Rico (5.1 percent), Michigan (3.7), Alaska (3.5), Rhode
Island (3.2), Hawaii (2.7), New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Delaware
(2.6), Oregon (2.6), and Washington (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
July 25 were in California (+7,338), Indiana (+684), Missouri (+393), Ohio
(+293), and Nevada (+227), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee
(-8,203), Alabama (-6,044), North Carolina (-5,594), Michigan (-5,238), and
Virginia (-3,986).
