SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 304,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 317,000. The 4-week moving average was 338,000, a decrease of
22,500 from the previous week's revised average of 360,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending July 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 18 was 2,414,000, an increase of 38,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,376,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,397,750, an
increase of 51,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,346,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 319,579 in the week ending July 25, a decrease of 45,445
from the previous week. There were 281,711 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending July 18, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,338,703, a
decrease of 58,939 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,234,431.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,825 in the week ending July 18, a decrease of 967 from the prior
week. There were 1,485 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 164 from the preceding week.
There were 17,609 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 11, an increase of 706 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,028, an increase of 95 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 11 were
in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Michigan (4.4), Alaska (3.8), Rhode Island (3.4),
Hawaii (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), New Jersey (2.7), Oregon (2.7), California
(2.6), and Washington (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 18 were
in Ohio (+2,687), Missouri (+2,125), Delaware (+1,798), Virginia (+1,627), and
Mississippi (+819), while the largest decreases were in New York (-9,867),
Pennsylvania (-8,830), Michigan (-7,795), California (-6,418), and Kentucky
(-4,850).
