SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 315,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 360,000, a decrease of
12,750 from the previous week's revised average of 372,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending July 11, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 11 was 2,372,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,379,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,344,500, an
increase of 52,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,292,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 363,077 in the week ending July 18, a decrease of 66,066
from the previous week. There were 339,250 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending July 11, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,393,032, an increase of 142,682 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,335,256.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,785 in the week ending July 11, an increase of 391 from the prior
week. There were 1,648 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 263 from the preceding week.
There were 17,001 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 4, an increase of 1,826 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,121, an increase of 1,042 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 4 were in
Puerto Rico (5.3 percent), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (3.1), Michigan (3.0),
Hawaii (2.8), Oregon (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), New Jersey (2.6), Washington
(2.6), and California (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 11 were
in Tennessee (+10,216), North Carolina (+9,392),Pennsylvania (+7,566), Alabama
(+7,281), and South Carolina (+5,796), while the largest decreases were in
Michigan (-10,371), Indiana (-3,582), Wisconsin (-1,989), Massachusetts
(-1,381), and California (-1,119).
