SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 392,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 393,000. The 4-week moving average was 370,500, an increase of 19,500 from the previous week's revised average of 351,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending June 27, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 27 was 2,411,000, an increase of 199,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,212,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,223,000, an increase of 71,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,151,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 377,679 in the week ending July 4, an increase of 29,110 from the previous week. There were 372,582 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending June 27, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,085,521, an increase of 94,753 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,051,481.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 20.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,882 in the week ending June 27, an increase of 463 from the prior week. There were 1,337 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 76 from the preceding week.

There were 15,812 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 20, an increase of 442 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,789, an increase of 470 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 20 were in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (4.1), Hawaii (2.7), Rhode Island (2.7), Oregon (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Washington (2.6), California (2.5), New Jersey (2.3), and West Virginia (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 27 were in Michigan (+7,148), New York (+6,393), Ohio (+5,925), Virginia (+3,335), and Massachusetts (+3,155), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-4,249), Maryland (-2,965), Pennsylvania (-2,675), Missouri (-1,575), and Hawaii (-771).
