SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 390,000, an increase of 24,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 366,000. The 4-week moving average was 350,250, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's revised average of 337,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending June 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 20 was 2,238,000, an increase of 75,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,163,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,158,000, an increase of 26,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,131,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 345,771 in the week ending June 27, an increase of 23,211 from the previous week. There were 298,304 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending June 20, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,013,820, an increase of 43,164 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,083,353.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending June 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,413 in the week ending June 20, a decrease of 232 from the prior week. There were 1,414 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 88 from the preceding week.

There were 15,528 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 13, a decrease of 60 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,532, an increase of 50 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 13 were in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Alaska (4.5), Hawaii (2.8), Oregon (2.7), California (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.5), Washington (2.5), Arkansas (2.2), and New Jersey (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 20 were in Michigan (+18,412), Wisconsin (+4,596), Indiana (+3,944), Maryland (+2,264), and Texas (+2,117), while the largest decreases were in Kansas (-3,050), Illinois (-2,229), Puerto Rico (-2,204), Louisiana (-1,776), and South Carolina (-1,437).
