SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 364,000, an increase of 34,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 330,000. The 4-week moving average was 336,500, an increase
of 13,750 from the previous week's revised average of 322,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending June 13, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 13 was 2,174,000, an increase of 66,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,108,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,134,250, an
increase of 26,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,108,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 320,370 in the week ending June 20, an increase of 27,353
from the previous week. There were 290,723 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent during the week ending June 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 1,980,903, an increase of 49,943 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was
2,067,162.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending June 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,641 in the week ending June 13, an increase of 56 from the prior
week. There were 1,322 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 123 from the preceding week.
There were 15,691 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 6, an increase of 667 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,672, an increase of 263 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 6 were in
Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (4.2), California (2.6), Hawaii (2.6), Oregon
(2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Washington (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.4), Arkansas
(2.3), and New Jersey (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 13 were
in Kansas (+3,338), Pennsylvania (+3,247), New Jersey (+3,198), Michigan
(+1,880), and Missouri (+1,285), while the largest decreases were in Ohio
(-4,165), North Carolina (-3,357), California (-2,023), New York (-1,898), and
Washington (-1,323).
