SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 327,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 322,000, an increase
of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 318,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending June 6, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 6 was 2,121,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,129,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,112,500, an
increase of 7,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,105,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 289,888 in the week ending June 13, an increase of 576 from
the previous week. There were 302,580 initial claims in the comparable week in
1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during
the week ending June 6, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,942,543, a
decrease of 5,707 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8
percent and the volume was 2,058,989.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending May 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,584 in the week ending June 6, an increase of 153 from the prior
week. There were 1,445 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 351 from the preceding week.
There were 15,154 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 30, an increase of 294 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,645, an increase of 190 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 30 were in
Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Alaska (4.9), Oregon (2.8), Washington (2.8),
California (2.7), Rhode Island (2.6), Hawaii (2.5), Idaho (2.5), Arkansas
(2.3), New Jersey (2.3), and Pennsylvania (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 6 were
in California (+6,193), Pennsylvania (+4,176), Ohio (+3,827), Illinois
(+3,209), and Michigan (+2,923), while the largest decreases were in South
Carolina (-3,040), Arkansas (-1,354), Idaho (-491), Kansas (-288), and Maine
(-211).
