SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 315,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was 319,000, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 316,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending May 30, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 30 was 2,137,000, an increase of 5,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,132,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,107,250, an
increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,095,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 289,470 in the week ending June 6, an increase of 41,026
from the previous week. There were 309,930 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending May 30, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,955,513, an increase of 53,577 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,098,258.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending May 23.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,415 in the week ending May 30, an increase of 164 from the prior
week. There were 1,086 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 199 from the preceding week.
There were 14,962 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 23, a decrease of 168 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,694, an increase of 170 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 23 were in
Alaska (4.7 percent), Puerto Rico (4.7), Oregon (2.8), Washington (2.7), Hawaii
(2.6), California (2.5), Rhode Island (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.4), New Jersey
(2.2), and Idaho (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 30 were
in South Carolina (+3,382), Ohio (+1,920), Arkansas (+1,102), Missouri (+701),
and Idaho (+388), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,205),
Maryland (-2,794), Florida (-1,145), Pennsylvania (-1,122), and New York
(-1,120).
