SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 339,000, an increase of 30,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 317,000, an increase
of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 309,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending May 23, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 23 was 2,150,000, an increase of 76,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,074,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,101,000, an
increase of 9,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,091,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 249,640 in the week ending May 30, a decrease of 8,811 from
the previous week. There were 248,169 initial claims in the comparable week in
1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during
the week ending May 23, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,917,588, a decrease of 42,547 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,013,918.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending May 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,403 in the week ending May 23, an increase of 197 from the prior
week. There were 1,284 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 14 from the preceding week.
There were 15,479 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 16, a decrease of 732 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,624, a decrease of 688 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 16 were in
Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (5.0), Oregon (2.8), Washington (2.8),
California (2.7), Rhode Island (2.7), Hawaii (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.4), New
Jersey (2.3), and Idaho (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 23 were
in Maryland (+2,304), Texas (+1,663), Mississippi (+814), Wisconsin (+813), and
Iowa (+505), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,032),
Pennsylvania (-1,701), Missouri (-889), Georgia (-530), and New Jersey (-482).
