SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 312,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 310,500, a decrease of
1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 312,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending May 16, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 16 was 2,124,000, an increase of 34,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,090,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,104,000, a
decrease of 8,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,112,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 261,300 in the week ending May 23, a decrease of 958 from
the previous week. There were 264,702 initial claims in the comparable week in
1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending May 16, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,007,279, a
decrease of 5,852 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8
percent and the volume was 2,094,824.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending May 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,220 in the week ending May 16, a decrease of 107 from the prior week.
There were 1,278 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 121
from the preceding week.
There were 16,221 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 9, an increase of 299 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,311, an increase of 263 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 9 were in
Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (5.3), Oregon (2.9), Washington (2.8),
California (2.7), Hawaii (2.7), Rhode Island (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.5), New
Jersey (2.4), and Idaho (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 16 were
in Missouri (+1,001), South Carolina (+809), Michigan (+658), Mississippi
(+655), and Connecticut (+493), while the largest decreases were in California
(-4,551), North Carolina (-1,232), Ohio (-983), Alabama (-937), and New York
(-862).
