SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 313,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 305,000. The 4-week moving average was 311,500, a decrease of
1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 313,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending May 9, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 9 was 2,107,000, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,095,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,118,000, a
decrease of 12,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,130,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 261,997 in the week ending May 16, a decrease of 7,887 from
the previous week. There were 267,254 initial claims in the comparable week in
1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending May 9, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,029,159, a
decrease of 3,443 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,182,533.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending May 2.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,328 in the week ending May 9, an increase of 75 from the prior week.
There were 1,397 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
147 from the preceding week.
There were 16,019 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 2, a decrease of 1,876 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,265, a decrease of 354 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 2 were in
Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (5.7), Oregon (2.9), Washington (2.9), Rhode
Island (2.8), California (2.7), Hawaii (2.5), Idaho (2.5), Montana (2.4), New
Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), and Vermont (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 9 were
in California (+6,383), North Carolina (+2,226), Alabama (+1,732), Texas
(+1,697), and Pennsylvania (+1,565), while the largest decreases were in
Missouri (-1,966), New Mexico (-1,072), Kentucky (-877), Michigan (-861), and
South Carolina (-799).
