SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 307,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 313,250, an increase
of 4,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 308,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending May 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 2 was 2,109,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,118,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,135,250, an
increase of 2,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,132,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 271,190 in the week ending May 9, an increase of 10,308
from the previous week. There were 278,058 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending May 2, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,045,755, a decrease of 108,027 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,211,482.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending April 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,252 in the week ending May 2, an increase of 46 from the prior week.
There were 1,249 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 36
from the preceding week.
There were 18,031 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 25, an increase of 556 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,612, an increase of 120 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 25 were
in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (5.6), California (3.0), Oregon (3.0),
Rhode Island (3.0), Washington (3.0), Vermont (2.8), Idaho (2.8), Hawaii (2.6),
Montana (2.6), and Pennsylvania (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 2 were
in California (+4,947), Missouri (+2,406), Kansas (+1,113), Nebraska (+792),
and New Mexico (+743), while the largest decreases were in New York (-9,720),
North Carolina (-6,690), Massachusetts (-3,580), New Jersey (-1,786), and
Tennessee (-1,303).
