SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 308,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 319,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,500, a decrease
of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 309,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending April 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 25 was 2,128,000, a decrease of 32,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,160,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,136,000, a
decrease of 10,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,146,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 259,820 in the week ending May 2, a decrease of 19,425 from
the previous week. There were 295,631 initial claims in the comparable week in
1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending April 25, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,163,856, a decrease of 80,288 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,320,702.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending April 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,206 in the week ending April 25, a decrease of 33 from the prior
week. There were 1,282 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 65 from the preceding week.
There were 17,559 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 18, a decrease of 1,637 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,674, a decrease of 112 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 18 were
in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.9), Rhode Island (3.4), California
(3.1), Idaho (3.1), Oregon (3.1), Washington (3.1), Montana (2.8), Vermont
(2.8), New Jersey (2.7), and Pennsylvania (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 25
were in New York (+6,421), North Carolina (+4,916), Massachusetts (+4,134),
Michigan (+1,081), and Delaware (+594), while the largest decreases were in
California (-4,512), New Jersey (-2,683), Wisconsin (-2,450), Pennsylvania
(-2,379), and South Carolina (-2,269).
