SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 319,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 318,000. The 4-week moving average was 309,250, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 307,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending April 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 18 was 2,167,000, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,160,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,149,250, a
decrease of 750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,150,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 279,397 in the week ending April 25, a decrease of 8,435
from the previous week. There were 295,168 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending April 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,251,556, a decrease of 86,090 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,321,191.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending April 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,238 in the week ending April 18, a decrease of 204 from the prior
week. There were 1,347 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 9 from the preceding week.
There were 19,224 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 11, an increase of 605 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,951, an increase of 378 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 11 were
in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (5.9), California (3.2), Rhode Island
(3.2), Washington (3.2), Oregon (3.1), Montana (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9),
Vermont (2.9), Idaho (2.8), and Maine (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 18
were in New Jersey (+4,326), South Carolina (+3,516), New York (+2,467),
Kentucky (+1,659), and Connecticut (+1,584), while the largest decreases were
in Pennsylvania (-2,702), Alabama (-2,645), California (-2,645), Texas
(-2,393), and Missouri (-2,020).
