SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 317,000, an increase of 29,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 288,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,750, an increase
of 750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 306,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending April 11, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 11 was 2,174,000, an increase of 74,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,100,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,153,750, a decrease of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,160,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 286,196 in the week ending April 18, a decrease of 7,490
from the previous week. There were 286,594 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending April 11, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,352,436, an increase of 55,457 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,450,251.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending April 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,442 in the week ending April 11, a decrease of 39 from the prior
week. There were 1,338 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 99 from the preceding week.
There were 18,651 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 4, a decrease of 2,430 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,728, a decrease of 716 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 4 were
in Alaska (6.1 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Rhode Island (3.4), Washington
(3.2), California (3.1), Idaho (3.1), Oregon (3.1), Maine (2.9), Montana (2.9),
and Vermont (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 11
were in Pennsylvania (+4,878), Alabama (+2,250), Wisconsin (+1,842), Texas
(+1,696), and Washington (+1,637), while the largest decreases were in
California (-7,183), North Carolina (-4,499), Illinois (-1,312), Arkansas
(-1,281), and Michigan (-1,230).
