SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 289,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 311,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,000, a decrease of
5,500 from the previous week's revised average of 311,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending April 4, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 4 was 2,121,000, a decrease of 55,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,176,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,166,500, a
decrease of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,172,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 294,403 in the week ending April 11, an increase of 5,490
from the previous week. There were 329,672 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending April 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,320,175, a decrease of 170,843 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,496,145.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending March 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,480 in the week ending April 4, an increase of 292 from the prior
week. There were 1,436 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 8 from the preceding week.
There were 21,199 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 28, an increase of 777 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,493, an increase of 20 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 28 were
in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (3.6), Montana (3.5),
Idaho (3.4), California (3.3), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.3), Washington
(3.3), and West Virginia (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 4 were
in California (+6,199), Illinois (+3,112), Arizona (+1,430), Arkansas (+1,245),
and Florida (+1,219), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-1,145),
Maryland (-794), Tennessee (-719), Minnesota (-694), and Oklahoma (-686).
