SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 308,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 310,000. The 4-week moving average was 310,750, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 308,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending March 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 28 was 2,185,000, an increase of 17,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,168,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,174,500, an increase of 4,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,169,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 286,702 in the week ending April 4, an increase of 14,273
from the previous week. There were 311,193 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending March 28, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,502,355, a
decrease of 19,054 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3
percent and the volume was 2,614,790.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending March 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,188 in the week ending March 28, a decrease of 126 from the prior
week. There were 1,428 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 98 from the preceding week.
There were 20,260 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 21, a decrease of 1,969 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,604, a decrease of 275 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 21 were
in Alaska (6.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Rhode Island (3.9), Idaho (3.5),
Washington (3.4), Montana (3.3), California (3.2), Oregon (3.2), Maine (3.1),
Pennsylvania (3.1), and West Virginia (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 28
were in California (+1,832), Oregon (+1,685), North Carolina (+1,069), Georgia
(+578), and Maine (+174), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania
(-3,416), Missouri (-2,965), Illinois (-2,671), Michigan (-1,551), and
Wisconsin (-1,490).
