SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 309,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,250, an increase
of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 307,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending March 21, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 21 was 2,182,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,200,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,173,500, an
increase of 8,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,165,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 271,102 in the week ending March 28, a decrease of 23,368
from the previous week. There were 268,824 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending March 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,537,923, a decrease of 114,745 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,631,578.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,318 in the week ending March 21, an increase of 98 from the prior
week. There were 1,530 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 102 from the preceding week.
There were 22,058 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 14, an increase of 545 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,014, a decrease of 3 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 14 were
in Alaska (6.2 percent), Puerto Rico (6.1), Rhode Island (4.1), Idaho (4.0),
Pennsylvania (3.7), West Virginia (3.6), Washington (3.5), California (3.4),
Montana (3.4), and Oregon (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 21
were in North Carolina (+1,220), Texas (+1,100), Oklahoma (+888), Alabama
(+830), and Tennessee (+710), while the largest decreases were in Ohio
(-1,771), Michigan (-1,478), California (-1,308), Washington (-763), and Idaho
(-757).
