SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 313,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,500, a decrease of
1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 308,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending March 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 14 was 2,210,000, an increase of 63,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,147,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,168,250, a decrease of 1,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,169,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 293,406 in the week ending March 21, a decrease of 2,913
from the previous week. There were 291,463 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during
the week ending March 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,664,688, an increase of 55,639 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,776,783.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
7.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,224 in the week ending March 14, a decrease of 170 from the prior
week. There were 1,423 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 203 from the preceding week.
There were 21,648 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 7, a decrease of 1,977 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,164, an increase of 31 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 7 were
in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.9), Idaho (4.0), Rhode Island (4.0),
Washington (3.6), Montana (3.4), Oregon (3.4), California (3.3), Maine (3.3),
and Pennsylvania (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 14
were in Missouri (+2,928), Ohio (+2,418), Kansas (+1,203), Wisconsin (+952),
and Arkansas (+685), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,646),
Michigan (-3,237), Georgia (-1,886), North Carolina (-1,822), and Texas
(-1,210).
