SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 308,000, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,000, a decrease of
250 from the previous week's revised average of 308,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending March 7, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 7 was 2,156,000, a decrease of 30,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,186,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,176,750, a
decrease of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,191,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 295,706 in the week ending March 14, a decrease of 10,565
from the previous week. There were 296,697 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending March 7, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,619,657, a decrease of 123,874 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,804,015.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending Feb.
28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,394 in the week ending March 7, an increase of 65 from the prior
week. There were 1,626 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 167 from the preceding week.
There were 23,721 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 28, an increase of 786 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,161, a decrease of 473 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 28 were
in Alaska (6.3 percent), Puerto Rico (6.2), Pennsylvania (4.3), Rhode Island
(4.3), Idaho (4.2), Montana (3.9), West Virginia (3.7), Washington (3.6),
California (3.5), and Oregon (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 7 were
in Texas (+3,093), Pennsylvania (+1,844), Georgia (+1,360), Florida (+1,085),
and Puerto Rico (+613), while the largest decreases were in New York (-7,656),
North Carolina (-2,598), Ohio (-1,248), California (-843), and Kentucky (-780).
