SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 298,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 305,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,000, a decrease of
1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 309,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Feb. 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 28 was 2,205,000, an increase of 49,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,156,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,198,000, an
increase of 1,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,197,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 304,969 in the week ending March 7, a decrease of 8,511
from the previous week. There were 314,790 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during
the week ending Feb. 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,767,886, an increase of 38,246 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,918,606.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Feb. 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,329 in the week ending Feb. 28, an increase of 175 from the prior
week. There were 1,459 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 141 from the preceding week.
There were 23,028 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 21, a decrease of 1,370 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,679, an increase of 561 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 21 were
in Alaska (6.8 percent), Puerto Rico (6.6), Rhode Island (4.6), Idaho (4.2),
Maine (3.7), Washington (3.7), Oregon (3.5), West Virginia (3.5), Arkansas
(3.4), California (3.4), Montana (3.4), and Pennsylvania (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 28 were
in New York (+9,818), Michigan (+3,776), North Carolina (+1,112), Pennsylvania
(+,793), and Alabama (+633), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts
(-4,177), Maryland (-2,333), Georgia (-2,153), Kentucky (-1,796), and Tennessee
(-1,665).
