SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATAIn the week ending Feb. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 304,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,750, unchanged from the previous week's revised average of 308,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Feb. 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 21 was 2,115,000, a decrease of 103,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,218,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,187,500, a decrease of 27,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,215,000. UNADJUSTED DATAThe advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 312,156 in the week ending Feb. 28, a decrease of 1,706 from the previous week. There were 317,339 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Feb. 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,678,184, a decrease of 40,967 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 2,975,723. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Feb. 14. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,154 in the week ending Feb. 21, a decrease of 306 from the prior week. There were 1,318 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 100 from the preceding week. There were 24,421 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 14, an increase of 421 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,119, a decrease of 1,042 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 14 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.5), Rhode Island (4.2), Idaho (4.1), Montana (3.9), West Virginia (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.7), Washington (3.7), Oregon (3.5), California (3.2), and New Jersey (3.2). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 21 were in Massachusetts (+3,845), Rhode Island (+1,987), Maryland (+1,892), Missouri (1,766), and Connecticut (+1,622), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,967), North Carolina (-3,814), New York (-3,338), Kentucky (-2,200), and Alabama (-1,728).
