SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 320,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 310,000. The 4-week moving average was 309,250, an increase
of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average of 304,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Feb. 14, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 14 was 2,231,000, an increase of 18,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,213,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,215,250, a
decrease of 7,750 from the preceding week's unrevised average of 2,223,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 312,239 in the week ending Feb. 21, a decrease of 15,839
from the previous week. There were 309,198 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during
the week ending Feb. 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,731,069, an
increase of 20,464 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6
percent and the volume was 2,952,798.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Feb. 7.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,467 in the week ending Feb. 14, a decrease of 329 from the prior
week. There were 1,424 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 308 from the preceding week.
There were 23,999 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 7, a decrease of 2,754 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,160, an increase of 268 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 7 were in
Alaska (7.0 percent), Puerto Rico (6.3), Rhode Island (4.3), Idaho (4.2),
Washington (3.8), Montana (3.6), Oregon (3.6), West Virginia (3.6), Maine
(3.5), and Pennsylvania (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 14 were
in Kentucky (+4,878), Delaware (+718), Arkansas (+522), Georgia (+462), and
Nevada (+227), while the largest decreases were in California (-18,755),
Illinois (-2,756), Pennsylvania (-2,754), New Jersey (-2,587), and New York
(-1,825).
