SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 303,000. The 4-week moving average was 302,000, a decrease
of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 308,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Feb. 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 7 was 2,211,000, an increase of 14,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,197,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,223,000, a
decrease of 8,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,231,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 318,421 in the week ending Feb. 14, a decrease of 49,562
from the previous week. There were 320,371 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during
the week ending Feb. 7, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,708,195, a decrease of 62,337 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 2,956,935.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 31.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,784 in the week ending Feb. 7, a decrease of 113 from the prior week.
There were 1,728 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 69
from the preceding week.
There were 26,784 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 31, an increase of 979 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,966, a decrease of 974 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 31 were
in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (6.5), Rhode Island (4.6), Idaho (4.3),
Montana (4.0), Washington (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.7), West Virginia (3.7),
Oregon (3.6), and Maine (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 7 were
in California (+21,646), Tennessee (+2,291), Texas (+1,113), Mississippi
(+791), and Colorado (+628), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-2,952), Georgia (-2,923), Maine (-1,372), North Carolina (-1,236), and
Illinois (-973).
