SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 303,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 305,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,750, a decrease of
9,000 from the previous week's revised average of 317,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Jan. 31, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 31 was 2,206,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,221,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,233,000, a
decrease of 53,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,286,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 367,376 in the week ending Feb. 7, an increase of 9,167
from the previous week. There were 370,765 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during
the week ending Jan. 31, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,781,475, a
decrease of 21,373 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6
percent and the volume was 3,025,971.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,893 in the week ending Jan. 31, an increase of 209 from the prior
week. There were 1,666 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 131 from the preceding week.
There were 25,839 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 24, a decrease of 2,542 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,955, an increase of 1,147 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 24 were
in Puerto Rico (7.5 percent), Alaska (7.1), Maine (4.5), Rhode Island (4.5),
Idaho (4.1), Washington (3.9), Montana (3.6), Oregon (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.5),
Arkansas (3.3), California (3.3), and West Virginia (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 31 were
in California (+10,822), North Carolina (+2,008), New York (+1,899), Illinois
(+1,277), and Rhode Island (+1,211), while the largest decreases were in
Alabama (-5,712), Ohio (-2,659), Tennessee (-2,252), Texas (-2,018), and
Missouri (-1,283).
