SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 303,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 300,000. The 4-week moving average was 317,250, a decrease of 7,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 324,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 24, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 24 was 2,233,000, a decrease of 32,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,265,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,290,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,319,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 356,563 in the week ending Jan. 31, an increase of 772 from the previous week. There were 380,106 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Jan. 24, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,817,976, an increase of 33,691 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 2,072,018.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,684 in the week ending Jan. 24, a decrease of 651 from the prior week. There were 1,535 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 435 from the preceding week.

There were 28,423 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 17, an increase of 1,732 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,855, a decrease of 763 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 17 were in Alaska (6.7 percent), Puerto Rico (5.5), Idaho (4.2), Rhode Island (4.2), Washington (4.0), Maine (3.9), Montana (3.7), Oregon (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), and West Virginia (3.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 24 were in Maine (+2,279), and Delaware (+29), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-15,682), Tennessee (-13,753), California (-13,322), Ohio (-11,879), and Pennsylvania (-11,717).
