SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 300,000, a decrease of 27,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 327,000. The 4-week moving average was 324,750, a decrease of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average of 329,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 17, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 17 was 2,277,000, an increase of 35,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,242,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,321,750, an increase of 10,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,311,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 355,913 in the week ending Jan. 24, a decrease of 156,707 from the previous week. There were 385,324 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Jan. 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,798,439, a decrease of 75,973 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 3,028,066.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 10.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,335 in the week ending Jan. 17, a decrease of 1,327 from the prior week. There were 1,970 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 47 from the preceding week.

There were 26,718 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 10, a decrease of 2,777 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,586, an increase of 99 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 10 were in Alaska (7.1 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (4.7), Idaho (4.0), Washington (3.8), Arkansas (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), West Virginia (3.5), Oregon (3.4), California (3.3), and Vermont (3.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 17 were in Georgia (+2,591), Ohio (+1,464), Nevada (+456), California (+323), and Puerto Rico (+190), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-29,107), Michigan (-20,623), Pennsylvania (-15,063), Tennessee (-11,930), and New York (-7,673).
