SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 326,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 339,000. The 4-week moving average was 329,000, an increase
of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 323,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Jan. 10, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from
the prior week's revised rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 10 was 2,230,000, a decrease of 191,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,421,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,309,250, an
increase of 750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,308,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 510,614 in the week ending Jan. 17, a decrease of 169,824
from the previous week. There were 513,615 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during
the week ending Jan. 10, a decrease of 0.3 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,858,715, a decrease of 319,641 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,103,515.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 3,576 in the week ending Jan. 10, an increase of 1,800 from the prior
week. There were 2,008 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 643 from the preceding week.
There were 29,082 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 3, an increase of 2,477 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,394, an increase of 448 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 3 were in
Alaska (6.7 percent), Puerto Rico (5.6), Rhode Island (5.5), Idaho (4.3),
Oregon (4.2), Pennsylvania (4.2), Arkansas (4.1), Washington (4.1), West
Virginia (4.1), and California (3.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 10 were
in North Carolina (+34,272), California (+19,911), Tennessee (+16,093),
Pennsylvania (+13,795), and Texas (+12,259), while the largest decreases were
in New York (-7,078), Indiana (-1,029), New Hampshire (-537), Connecticut
(-460), and Iowa (-195).
