SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 335,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 332,000. The 4-week moving average was 322,500, an increase
of 3,750 from the previous week's revised average of 318,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending Jan. 3, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 3 was 2,377,000, an increase of 36,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,341,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,295,500, an
increase of 36,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,259,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 674,244 in the week ending Jan. 10, an increase of 196,080
from the previous week. There were 654,415 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during
the week ending Jan. 3, an increase of 0.5 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 3,121,263, an increase of 534,970 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 3.0 percent and the volume was 3,408,571.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Dec. 27.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,776 in the week ending Jan. 3, an increase of 70 from the prior week.
There were 1,364 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
197 from the preceding week.
There were 26,621 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Dec. 27, a decrease of 75 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,882, an increase of 2,239 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 27 were
in Alaska (6.1 percent), Puerto Rico (5.6), Rhode Island (4.1), Idaho (3.9),
Washington (3.9), Oregon (3.7), Arkansas (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.2), Wisconsin
(3.2), California (3.1), and Vermont (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 3 were
in North Carolina (+21,813), New York (+19,445), South Carolina (+13,349),
Tennessee (+12,623), and Alabama (+4,942), while the largest decreases were in
Texas (-13,103), Wisconsin (-6,986), Massachusetts (-4,993), Iowa (-3,952), and
California (-3,948).
