SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 334,000, an increase of 20,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,250, an increase
of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average of 313,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending Dec. 27, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 27 was 2,350,000, an increase of 115,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,235,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,260,750, an increase of 24,000 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,236,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 481,533 in the week ending Jan. 3, an increase of 43,029
from the previous week. There were 541,227 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending Dec. 27, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,596,254, an increase of 464,531 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 2,914,199.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Dec. 20.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,694 in the week ending Dec. 27, a decrease of 83 from the prior week.
There were 1,177 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 474
from the preceding week.
There were 26,779 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Dec. 20, a decrease of 223 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,750, a decrease of 2,693 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 20 were
in Alaska (5.2 percent), Puerto Rico (4.7), Washington (3.3), Rhode Island
(3.2), Idaho (3.1), Oregon (3.0), California (2.8), Montana (2.7), Pennsylvania
(2.7), and Arkansas (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 27 were
in Wisconsin (+15,763), Michigan (+12,144), Pennsylvania (+10,992),
Massachusetts (+7,699), and Kentucky (+7,019), while the largest decreases were
in California (-9,327), North Carolina (-4,130), South Carolina (-2,704),
Virginia (-2,337), and Georgia (-2,177).
