SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 307,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,750, an increase
of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 315,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Dec. 13, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 13 was 2,237,000, an increase of 1,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,236,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,252,000, an
increase of 7,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,244,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 372,612 in the week ending Dec. 20, a decrease of 2,348
from the previous week. There were 429,566 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending Dec. 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,323,892, an increase of 130,762 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,533,189.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
Dec. 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,229 in the week ending Dec.13, a decrease of 51 from the prior week.
There were 1,638 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 157
from the preceding week.
There were 28,703 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Dec. 6, an increase of 1,550 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,422, a decrease of 1,520 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 6 were in
Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (5.3), Washington (3.2), California (3.1),
Rhode Island (3.1), Arkansas (2.8), Oregon (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), Idaho
(2.7), Montana (2.6), and West Virginia (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 13 were
in Ohio (+6,149), Illinois (+4,784), Missouri (+2,935), Virginia (+1,938), and
Kansas (+1,266), while the largest decreases were in California (-10,200),
Pennsylvania (-6,176), North Carolina (-5,915), New York (-5,650), and
Tennessee (-3,344).
