SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 310,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 324,000. The 4-week moving average was 324,000, a decrease of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 325,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Aug. 30, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 30 was 2,369,000 an increase of 57,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,312,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,319,750, an increase of 36,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,283,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 223,579 in the week ending Sept. 6, a decrease of 26,420 from the previous week. There were 238,901 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Aug. 30, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,957,001, a decrease of 100,499 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,108,790.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 23.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,629 in the week ending Aug. 30, a decrease of 86 from the prior week. There were 1,851 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 935 from the preceding week.

There were 21,468 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 23, a decrease of 1,781 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,797, a decrease of 408 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 23 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (3.5), Rhode Island (3.4), California (2.7), Hawaii (2.7), New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.6), Washington (2.6), Arkansas (2.3), and Oregon (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 30 were in Illinois (+1,912), Pennsylvania (+768), Oregon (+533), Virginia (+477), and Missouri (+242), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-1,226), Arkansas (-1,200), Texas (-795), North Carolina (-645), and Wisconsin (-641).
