SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 326,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 324,000. The 4-week moving average was 326,500, an increase
of 5,500 from the previous week's revised average of 321,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending Aug. 23, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Aug. 23 was 2,367,000 an increase of 56,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,311,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,298,000, an
increase of 14,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,283,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 251,478 in the week ending Aug. 30, a decrease of 4,401
from the previous week. There were 251,438 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending Aug. 23, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,106,631, a
decrease of 3,476 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,239,076.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Aug. 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,711 in the week ending Aug. 23, a decrease of 5 from the prior week.
There were 2,785 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
840 from the preceding week.
There were 23,190 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Aug. 16, an increase of 62 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,290, an increase of 248 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 16 were
in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (3.5), Hawaii (2.9),
New Jersey (2.8), California (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Washington (2.6),
Arkansas (2.4), and Oregon (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 23 were
in Arkansas (+1,237), New York (+712), Missouri (+622), Hawaii (+345), and
Georgia (+329), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,852), North
Carolina (-2,406), Michigan (-1,907), Pennsylvania (-1,416), and South Carolina
(-1,055).
