SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 323,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 339,000. The 4-week moving average was 320,750, an increase of 12,250 from the previous week's revised average of 308,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Aug. 16, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 16 was 2,322,000 an increase of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,293,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,287,250, an increase of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,285,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 255,060 in the week ending Aug. 23, a decrease of 17,573 from the previous week. There were 259,690 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Aug. 16, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,119,904, an increase of 1,401 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,280,788.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 9.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,711 in the week ending Aug. 16, a decrease of 185 from the prior week. There were 1,990 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 87 from the preceding week.

There were 23,116 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 9, a decrease of 993 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,072, an increase of 9 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 9 were in Puerto Rico (6.7 percent), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (3.3), California (2.7), New Jersey (2.7), Washington (2.7), Hawaii (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Arkansas (2.4), and Oregon (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 16 were in Pennsylvania (+930), Illinois (+600), West Virginia (+410), New Jersey (+378), and Kansas (+376), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,988), Texas (-3,160), Kentucky (-2,339), Ohio (-1,108), and Connecticut (-970).
