SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 300,000, an increase of 25,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 275,000. The 4-week moving average was 303,750, a decrease of
21,500 from the previous week's revised average of 325,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending July 26, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 26 was 2,352,000, an increase of 32,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,320,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,326,750, a
decrease of 26,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,353,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 269,840 in the week ending Aug. 2, a decrease of 14,465
from the previous week. There were 283,229 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending July 26, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,222,918, a
decrease of 9,042 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1
percent and the volume was 2,373,525.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,093 in the week ending July 26, a decrease of 137 from the prior
week. There were 1,883 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 83 from the preceding week.
There were 23,677 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 19, an increase of 2,232 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,998, an increase of 1,517 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 19 were
in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Rhode Island (3.9), Alaska (3.5), Hawaii (3.0),
California (2.8), New Jersey (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.7), Washington (2.6),
Arkansas (2.5), and Oregon (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 26 were
in Indiana (+4,774), Texas (+558), Idaho (+234), Maine (+120), and Vermont
(+107), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-10,142), North Carolina
(-8,363), Alabama (-6,045), Michigan (-5,225), and California (-3,902).
