SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 277,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was 325,750, a decrease
of 15,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 340,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending July 19, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 19 was 2,335,000, an increase of 2,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,333,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,358,000, an
increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,354,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 285,903 in the week ending July 26, a decrease of 53,772
from the previous week. There were 294,772 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending July 19, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,245,805, a decrease of 92,234 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,432,671.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,269 in the week ending July 19, a decrease of 1,008 from the prior
week. There were 1,803 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 199 from the preceding week.
There were 21,297 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 12, a decrease of 69 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,474, a decrease of 729 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 12 were
in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Alaska (3.9), Rhode Island (3.9), Michigan (3.0),
California (2.9), Hawaii (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8),
Washington (2.7), Arkansas (2.6), and Oregon (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 19 were
in Missouri (+3,780), Ohio (+2,024), Louisiana (+805), Nevada (+319), and New
Mexico (+306), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-24,694), Indiana
(-6,004), Pennsylvania (-5,587), North Carolina (-5,138), and Illinois
(-4,915).
