SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 299,000, a decrease of 42,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 341,000. The 4-week moving average was 340,750, a decrease of
8,250 from the previous week's revised average of 349,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending July 12, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending July 12 was 2,302,000, an increase of 2,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,300,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,345,000, an increase of 8,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,336,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 338,854 in the week ending July 19, a decrease of 88,292
from the previous week. There were 360,395 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending July 12, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,306,243, an increase of 111,803 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,554,691.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 5.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 3,272 in the week ending July 12, an increase of 107 from the prior
week. There were 1,997 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 182 from the preceding week.
There were 21,262 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 5, an increase of 2,701 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,176, an increase of 673 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 5 were in
Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (4.0), Rhode Island (3.7), California (3.0),
Hawaii (3.0), New Jersey (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), Oregon (2.7), Arkansas
(2.6), and Washington (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 12 were
in Tennessee (+14,020), North Carolina (+11,734), Alabama (+9,234), Michigan
(+7,928), and South Carolina (+7,527), while the largest decreases were in New
York (-17,096), Ohio (-3,376), Arkansas (-2,890), Wisconsin (-2,800), and Texas
(-2,039).
